In más … que, menos … que, tan … como you learnt más... que and menos... que. Four very common ideas don't use más. They have their own word, as English does with better and worse.
Better and worse
| Base form | Comparative | Superlative |
|---|---|---|
| bueno (good), bien (well) | mejor (better) | el mejor (the best) |
| malo (bad), mal (badly) | peor (worse) | el peor (the worst) |
- Tu idea es mejor que la mía.Your idea is better than mine.
- Esta película es peor que la primera. This film is worse than the first one.
Mejor and peor have no feminine form, but they do have a plural: mejores, peores.
- Mis notas son mejores este año.My marks are better this year.
They also replace the adverbs bien and mal. Then they never change.
- Mi hermana conduce mejor que yo.My sister drives better than me.
- Hoy jugamos peor que la semana pasada. We're playing worse today than last week.
After que, Spanish uses the subject pronoun: mejor que yo, peor que tú, not que mí.
Older and younger
For people's age, use mayor (older) and menor (younger). Plural: mayores, menores.
- Mi primo es tres años mayor que yo.My cousin is three years older than me.
- Mi hermana menor estudia medicina. My younger sister is studying medicine.
- Raúl es el mayor de los cuatro hermanos.Raúl is the eldest of the four brothers.
In Spain, family members are also el hermano pequeño (the younger or youngest brother) and la hija mayor. Without a comparison, mayor also means elderly, a polite word: una señora mayor.
Size
For physical size, everyday Spanish says más grande and más pequeño. Mayor and menor are used for size in abstract or formal contexts: el mayor problema (the biggest problem), de menor importancia (of less importance).
- Su piso es más grande que el nuestro.Their flat is bigger than ours.
The best... in the group
The superlative follows the pattern from Superlatives and -ísimo. Mejor and peor usually go before the noun.
- Es el mejor restaurante del barrio. It's the best restaurant in the neighbourhood.
- Fue la peor noche de mi vida.It was the worst night of my life.
In speech you will hear más bueno and más malo for kindness or taste (Este chico es más bueno que el pan). For quality, the normal word is mejor or peor.
Common mistakes
más mejor,más peor→ mejor, peor. They already contain "more".más mayor→ mayor. You will hear más mayor in casual Spain Spanish for "more grown up", but avoid it.Ella canta mejora→ Ella canta mejor. There is no feminine form.las mejor playas→ las mejores playas. As an adjective, mejor has a plural.Él es más bien que yo→ Él es mejor que yo. Más bien means "rather".
