Comparing two things

Spanish has no -er ending like taller or faster. Instead it puts a word before the adjective:

SpanishEnglish
más + adjective + quemore … than, -er than
menos + adjective + queless … than
tan + adjective + comoas … as
  • Mi hermano es más alto que yo.My brother is taller than me.
  • El tren es más rápido que el autobús.The train is faster than the bus.
  • Madrid es menos tranquilo que mi pueblo.Madrid is less quiet than my village.
  • Esta camisa es tan cara como esa. This shirt is as expensive as that one.
  • Ana no es tan alta como su madre.Ana isn't as tall as her mother.

The adjective still agrees with what it describes: las manzanas son más baratas que las fresas.

Más (more) has an accent. Without it, mas is an old, literary word for “but”.

Pronouns: que yo, como tú

After que and como, use the subject pronouns yo and tú, not mí and ti: más alto que yo, tan alto como tú.

Comparing with nouns

  • más / menos + noun + que: Tengo más libros que tú.
  • tanto, tanta, tantos, tantas + noun + como: tanto agrees with the noun.
  • Hoy no hay tanta gente como ayer. There aren't as many people today as yesterday.

Comparing actions

After a verb, use más que, menos que and tanto como:

  • Mi padre duerme más que yo.My father sleeps more than me.
  • Yo no como tanto como mi hermano.I don't eat as much as my brother.

Más de with numbers

Before a number, “more than” is más de: más de diez personas, menos de cinco euros.

  • En mi clase hay más de veinte alumnos. There are more than twenty pupils in my class.

Irregular forms

Bueno and malo usually have their own forms: mejor (better) and peor (worse). Mayor and menor are used for age. These come in mejor, peor, mayor, menor, and “the most” in Superlatives and -ísimo. Before más, “much” is mucho (Muy or mucho; poco, bastante, demasiado): mucho más caro.

Common mistakes

  • Más alto de mí → Más alto que yo.
  • Tan alto que → Tan alto como.
  • Tan amigos como → Tantos amigos como. Before a noun, use tanto and make it agree.
  • Más que veinte → Más de veinte.
  • Más bueno que (better quality) → Mejor que. Más bueno is sometimes heard for “kinder” or “tastier”, but mejor is the safe choice.
