Most verbs in the preterite are regular (Preterite of regular verbs), but three groups have small, predictable changes. Learn the rule once and you can handle hundreds of verbs.

1. -ir stem-changers: only in the third person

In the present, verbs like pedir (pide) and dormir (duerme) change their stem (Stem-changing verbs e → i (pedir, repetir), Stem-changing verbs o → ue, u → ue (poder, jugar)). In the preterite, only -ir verbs change, and only in the él/ella/usted and ellos/ellas/ustedes forms: e becomes i, o becomes u.

él / ella / ustedpidiódurmió
nosotros/aspedimosdormimos
vosotros/aspedisteisdormisteis
ellos / ellas / ustedespidierondurmieron

Like pedir: servir (sirvió), repetir (repitió), preferir (prefirió), sentir (sintió), seguir (siguió), divertirse (se divirtió), vestirse (se vistió). Like dormir: morir (murió).

  • El camarero nos sirvió un café.The waiter served us a coffee.
  • Mi hijo durmió diez horas. My son slept for ten hours.
  • ¿Qué pidieron tus amigos? What did your friends order?
  • Mis abuelos se divirtieron mucho en el viaje. My grandparents had a great time on the trip.

-ar and -er stem-changers do not change: pensó, volvió, entendió.

2. -car, -gar, -zar: a spelling change in yo

The yo ending is -é. Before e, Spanish spelling needs a change to keep the same sound:

EndingChangeExamples
-carc → qubuscar: busqué, tocar: toqué, sacar: saqué
-garg → gullegar: llegué, pagar: pagué, jugar: jugué
-zarz → cempezar: empecé, cruzar: crucé, almorzar: almorcé

Only the yo form changes: buscaste, buscó, buscamos are regular.

  • Busqué mis gafas por toda la casa.I looked for my glasses all over the house.
  • Llegué tarde a la reunión.I arrived late for the meeting.
  • Empecé las clases de baile en octubre.I started dance classes in October.
  • Pagué la cena con tarjeta.I paid for dinner by card.

3. i becomes y between vowels

When the stem ends in a vowel (le-er, cre-er, o-ír, ca-er, constru-ir), the i of -ió and -ieron becomes y: leyó, leyeron; creyó; oyó, oyeron; cayó; construyó. The other forms keep an accented í: leí, leíste, leímos, leísteis. (Verbs in -uir such as construir are the exception: construí, construiste, construimos, with no accent on -iste, -imos.)

  • Mi madre leyó el libro en dos días.My mother read the book in two days.
  • ¿Oíste ese ruido?Did you hear that noise?

Common mistakes

  • Pedió, dormió → pidió, durmió. -ir stem-changers use i and u in the third person.
  • Piensó, vuelvió → pensó, volvió. -ar and -er stem-changers are regular in the preterite.
  • Buscé, llegé, empezé → busqué, llegué, empecé. The spelling keeps the sound.
  • Leió, oieron → leyó, oyeron. Between vowels, i becomes y.
  • Leiste → leíste. The accent on í keeps le-ís-te as three syllables.
