Legal, administrative and academic Spanish has its own grammar habits and fixed formulas. You need to read them accurately, because a single phrase can change who owes what to whom.
Features of legal and administrative texts
- Deontic future: podrá (may), deberá (shall), será (shall be) state rights and duties, not predictions.
- Impersonal and passive forms: se convoca, queda prohibido, será sancionado.
- Nominalisation: el incumplimiento de, la presentación de solicitudes.
- Anaphoric adjectives: dicho, el citado, el mencionado, el referido, el presente.
- Quien + subjunctive for general rules; older texts use the future subjunctive (The future subjunctive in legal texts and set phrases (sea lo que fuere)).
- El arrendatario no podrá subarrendar la vivienda sin el consentimiento por escrito del arrendador.The tenant may not sublet the dwelling without the landlord's written consent.
- La presente resolución entrará en vigor al día siguiente de su publicación.This decision shall enter into force on the day after its publication.
- Queda prohibida la entrada a toda persona ajena a la obra.Entry is prohibited to anyone not working on the site.
- El plazo de presentación de solicitudes será de diez días hábiles.The deadline for submitting applications shall be ten working days.

An official application (instancia) has two parts: EXPONE, the facts and reasons, then SOLICITA, the request itself.
- El que suscribe solicita que le sea concedida una prórroga.The undersigned requests that an extension be granted.
Academic prose
Spanish academic writing prefers impersonal se, the plural of modesty (consideramos), and hedges (Hedging and stance: cabe señalar, al parecer, en cierto modo). It avoids the chatty vamos a ver and English calques like este capítulo mira.
- En el presente trabajo se analiza la evolución del voto rural entre 1977 y 2019.This paper analyses the evolution of the rural vote between 1977 and 2019.
- Habida cuenta de los datos expuestos, cabe concluir que la hipótesis inicial no se sostiene.In view of the data presented, it may be concluded that the initial hypothesis does not hold.
Latin America
The legal formulas are shared, though terms differ: arrendatario (formal) and inquilino (everyday) are used everywhere, but Spain's DNI is a cédula in many countries and the BOE has national equivalents (Diario Oficial). Some countries still write el suscrito for the undersigned.
Common mistakes
en base a: widely criticised; prefer con base en, sobre la base de or basándose en.- The gerund of a later event,
huyó, siendo detenido después: write huyó y fue detenido después. - The gerund as an adjective,
una ley regulando el alquiler: write una ley que regula el alquiler. - Reading podrá as a prediction: in a contract it grants a right.
- Overusing a nivel de (
a nivel de precios): say en cuanto a los precios or en materia de precios.
