Ordinal numbers show order: first, second, third…
How to form them
Add -ième to the cardinal number. If it ends in -e, drop the e first.
- deux → deuxième, trois → troisième
- quatre → quatrième, onze → onzième
- vingt → vingtième, cent → centième
Spelling changes
- cinq → cinquième
- neuf → neuvième
- vingt et un → vingt et unième
First and second
- premier (m.) / première (f.)first
- deuxième or second / secondesecond (second is used when there are only two)

Abbreviations
- 1er / 1re, 2e, 3e, 21e

For dates and kings, French uses cardinal numbers (except premier): le 2 mai, Louis XIV (quatorze), François Ier (premier).
