Question words – où, quand, comment, pourquoi…

Where, when, how, why, how much

Question words ask for information. They combine with the three question structures you've learnt (intonation, est-ce que, inversion).

The question words

Three ways to ask

  • Où tu habites ? (casual: question word anywhere, often at the end: Tu habites où ?)
  • Où est-ce que tu habites ? (neutral)
  • Où habites-tu ? (formal)
  • Quand est-ce que tu pars ?When are you leaving?
  • Comment vous appelez-vous ?What's your name?
  • Pourquoi tu ris ? – Parce que c'est drôle !Why are you laughing? – Because it's funny!
  • Combien coûte ce livre ?How much does this book cost?
  • Combien de frères as-tu ?How many brothers do you have?

What: que, qu'est-ce que, quoi

  • Qu'est-ce que tu fais ?What are you doing? (neutral)
  • Que fais-tu ? (formal)
  • Tu fais quoi ? (casual, quoi at the end)

Quoi is also used after prepositions: De quoi tu parles ? More in Qui, que, qu'est-ce qui, qu'est-ce que.

Comment for "what?"

If you didn't hear something: Comment ? or Pardon ? is more polite than Quoi ?
