Qui, que, qu'est-ce qui, qu'est-ce que

Asking 'who' and 'what'

To ask who or what, the form depends on two things: is it a person or thing, and is it the subject or object of the verb?

Who: qui

Subject (who does the action):

  • Qui parle ?Who's speaking?
  • Qui a mangé mon gâteau ?Who ate my cake?

Object (who receives the action):

  • Qui est-ce que tu as vu ?Who did you see?
  • Qui cherchez-vous ?Who are you looking for? (inversion)
  • Tu as vu qui ?Who did you see? (casual)

What as subject: qu'est-ce qui

  • Qu'est-ce qui se passe ?What's happening?
  • Qu'est-ce qui ne va pas ?What's wrong?
  • Qu'est-ce qui t'intéresse ?What interests you?

What as object: qu'est-ce que / que

  • Qu'est-ce que tu veux ?What do you want?
  • Que veux-tu ? (formal)
  • Tu veux quoi ? (casual)

The pattern

In qu'est-ce qui and *qu'est-ce que*, the first part (qui/qu') tells you person or thing, and the last part (qui/que) tells you subject or object.

After prepositions: qui / quoi

  • À qui penses-tu ?Who are you thinking about?
  • De quoi parlez-vous ?What are you talking about?
  • Avec quoi ?With what?
