Quel, quelle, quels, quelles
Which / what + noun
Quel means which or what when it goes with a noun. It's an adjective, so it agrees with the noun.
The forms
| singular | plural | |
|---|---|---|
| masculine | quel | quels |
| feminine | quelle | quelles |
All four sound the same: kel.
Quel + noun
- Quel âge as-tu ?How old are you?
- Quelle heure est-il ?What time is it?
- Quels films aimes-tu ?Which films do you like?
- Quelles langues parlez-vous ?What languages do you speak?
- Tu prends quel train ?Which train are you taking?
Quel + être + noun
Quel can be separated from its noun by être. It still agrees:
- Quelle est ton adresse ?What's your address?
- Quel est ton numéro ?What's your number?
- Quels sont tes projets ?What are your plans?
This is where English speakers often wrongly use qu'est-ce que. To ask What is your name / address / job?, use quel.
After a preposition
- À quelle heure ?At what time?
- Dans quel quartier habites-tu ?Which area do you live in?
Exclamations
- Quelle belle journée !What a beautiful day!
- Quel dommage !What a shame!
No article after quel in exclamations: quelle une surprise.
To say "which one?" without a noun, use lequel: see Relative pronouns.
