Adverbial pronoun en – with quantities
J'en ai deux
En replaces a noun used with a quantity. It means some, any, of it, of them.
En replaces du, de la, des, de
- Tu veux du café ? – Oui, j'en veux.Do you want some coffee? – Yes, I want some.
- Il y a des pommes ? – Oui, il y en a.Are there any apples? – Yes, there are (some).
- Tu as de l'argent ? – Non, je n'en ai pas.Do you have any money? – No, I don't (have any).
English can often drop the pronoun (Yes, I want some), but French must use en.
With numbers and quantities
Keep the number or quantity word at the end:
- Tu as combien de frères ? – J'en ai deux.I have two (of them).
- Tu as des amis à Paris ? – Oui, j'en ai beaucoup.Yes, I have lots.
- Il mange combien de croissants ? – Il en mange trois.He eats three.
- Je voudrais un kilo de tomates. – Désolé, je n'en ai plus.Sorry, I don't have any left.
Position
Before the verb, like other pronouns. With other pronouns, en always comes last: Il y en a. Je t'en donne.
- Je vais en acheter.I'm going to buy some.
- Donne-m'en !Give me some!
En vs le / la / les
- en = some/a quantity: Tu bois du thé ? – Oui, j'en bois.
- le/la/les = the specific thing: Tu bois ton thé ? – Oui, je le bois.
