Relative pronoun – où
La ville où j'habite, le jour où…
Où as a relative pronoun introduces a clause about a place or a time.
Place: where
- La ville où je suis né est petite.The town where I was born is small.
- C'est le restaurant où on a dîné.It's the restaurant where we had dinner.
- Je connais un café où on peut travailler.I know a café where you can work.
Time: when
This is where English speakers go wrong. For time, French uses où, never quand:
- Le jour où je t'ai rencontré…The day (when) I met you…
- Au moment où il est parti, il a commencé à pleuvoir.Just as he left, it started raining.
- L'année où nous nous sommes mariés…The year we got married…
Le jour quand is wrong.
With prepositions
- d'oùfrom where: la ville d'où il vient (the town he comes from)
- par oùthrough where, which way: Par où es-tu passé ?
Où vs dans lequel
For places, où can often replace dans lequel / sur lequel:
- la maison dans laquelle j'habitela maison où j'habite
