Causative faire – faire faire

Je fais réparer ma voiture

Faire + infinitive expresses causing something to happen: having something done or making someone do something.

Having something done

  • Je fais réparer ma voiture.I'm having my car repaired.
  • Elle fait construire une maison.She's having a house built.
  • J'ai fait couper mes cheveux.I had my hair cut.

Making someone do something

  • Ce film me fait rire.This film makes me laugh.
  • Le prof fait travailler les élèves.The teacher makes the students work.
  • Tu me fais peur !You're scaring me!

Reflexive: se faire + infinitive

Something done to or for yourself:

  • Je me suis fait couper les cheveux.I had my hair cut.
  • Il s'est fait voler son portefeuille.He had his wallet stolen.
  • Elle s'est fait opérer.She had an operation.

Pronouns go before faire

  • Ma voiture ? Je la fais réparer.I'm having it repaired.
  • Je lui fais faire ses devoirs.I make him do his homework.

No agreement of fait

In the passé composé, fait never agrees in this structure: Ces maisons, je les ai fait construire. (not faites)

Laisser + infinitive: to let

  • Laisse-moi parler.Let me speak.
  • Il a laissé tomber son téléphone.He dropped his phone.
  • Laisse tomber !Forget it!
