The passive voice

La souris est mangée par le chat

In the passive voice, the subject receives the action: The mouse is eaten by the cat.

How to form it

être (in any tense) + past participle, which agrees with the subject. The agent is introduced by par (by).

  • Le chat mange la souris. → La souris est mangée par le chat.
  • On a construit ce pont en 1900. → Ce pont a été construit en 1900.
  • Les résultats seront publiés demain. The results will be published tomorrow.
  • La lettre avait été envoyée.The letter had been sent.

The tense is carried by être: est mangée (present), a été mangée (passé composé), sera mangée (future).

Par or de?

Par for actions. De for states, feelings and descriptions:

  • Il est aimé de tous. He's loved by everyone.
  • Le jardin est entouré d'arbres. The garden is surrounded by trees.
  • Elle est respectée de ses collègues.

French prefers to avoid the passive

The passive is less common than in English. French often uses:

On + active verb: > On parle français ici. = French is spoken here. > On m'a volé mon sac. = My bag was stolen.

A pronominal verb: > Ça se vend bien. = It sells well. > Le vin blanc se boit frais. = White wine is drunk chilled. > Ça ne se fait pas. = That isn't done.

Only verbs with a direct object can be made passive. On m'a donné un livre can't become je suis donné un livre as it would in English (I was given a book). Use on.
