Past subjunctive

Bien qu'il soit parti

The past subjunctive (subjonctif passé) is used wherever the subjunctive is required, for an action completed before the main verb (or before a future point).

How to form it

avoir or être in the present subjunctive + past participle

  • que j'aie fini, que tu aies fini, qu'il ait fini, que nous ayons fini, que vous ayez fini, qu'ils aient fini
  • que je sois parti(e), qu'il soit parti, que nous soyons parti(e)s…

Uses

  • Je suis content que tu sois venu.I'm glad you came.
  • Bien qu'elle ait beaucoup travaillé, elle a échoué.Although she worked hard, she failed.
  • Je doute qu'il ait compris.I doubt he understood.
  • Il faut que tu aies fini avant midi. You must have finished by noon.

Present vs past subjunctive

The choice depends on when the action happens relative to the main verb:

  • Je suis content que tu viennes.I'm glad you're coming. (same time or later)
  • Je suis content que tu sois venu.I'm glad you came. (before)

After superlatives and le seul, le premier…

  • C'est le meilleur film que j'aie jamais vu.It's the best film I've ever seen.
  • C'est la seule personne qui m'ait aidé.She's the only person who helped me.

See Subjunctive in relative clauses.

Imperfect and pluperfect subjunctive

Literary texts also use the imperfect subjunctive (qu'il fût, qu'il eût, qu'il fît) and the pluperfect subjunctive (qu'il eût fini). Recognize them; you won't need to produce them. Fût-ce = "even if it were".
