Ne explétif
Avant qu'il ne parte, j'ai peur qu'il ne pleuve
The ne explétif is a ne that appears in formal French in certain subordinate clauses without making them negative. It's optional, but you'll see it constantly in careful writing and hear it in formal speech.
Where it appears
After expressions of fear (avoir peur que, craindre que, de peur que, de crainte que): > J'ai peur qu'il ne pleuve. = I'm afraid it will rain. > Je crains qu'il ne soit trop tard. = I fear it's too late.
= Let's leave before it gets dark. > Je viendrai, à moins qu'il ne pleuve. = I'll come, unless it rains.
In comparisons of inequality: > Il est plus intelligent que je ne pensais. = He's smarter than I thought. > C'est moins difficile qu'on ne le dit. = It's less difficult than people say.
= We must stop him falling.
It does NOT negate
- J'ai peur qu'il ne vienne.I'm afraid he will come.
- J'ai peur qu'il ne vienne pas.I'm afraid he won't come.
The real negative needs pas. Without pas, the ne is purely stylistic.
Optional
You can always leave it out: J'ai peur qu'il vienne means the same thing, in a more relaxed register.
The trap is reading ne as a negative. If there's no pas, rien, jamais, etc., check whether you're after one of the triggers above.
