Even if… / If only… / Supposing that…

Beyond si, French has a range of ways to express hypotheses, conditions and reported claims.

quand bien même + conditional: even if

Even if he apologised, I wouldn't believe him.

pour peu que + subjunctive: if only, as long as (just a little)

As long as the weather is at all nice, we'll go out.

  • À supposer que vous ayez raison, que faire ?Supposing you're right, what should we do?

The journalistic conditional

The conditional reports unconfirmed information:

  • Il serait parti à l'étranger. He has reportedly gone abroad.
  • L'incendie aurait fait trois victimes. The fire is said to have claimed three victims.

Literary inversion instead of si

Had it not been for his caution, he would have died.
  • Il eût fallu le prévenir. We should have warned him.

Related: Si + plus-que-parfait → conditionnel passé, Imperfect and pluperfect subjunctive.
