¡Qué …!, ¡Cuánto …!, ¡Vaya!

React like a native speaker: ¡Qué bonito!, ¡Qué día más largo!, ¡Cuánta gente!, ¡Vaya!

An exclamation shows a strong feeling: surprise, joy, annoyance. Spanish writes ¡ at the start and ! at the end, as it does with ¿ and ? for questions (Word stress, written accents, ¿ and ¡).

The exclamation words carry a written accent, just like the question words (Every question word: qué, cuál, quién, cuánto, por qué…): qué, cuánto, cómo. Without the accent, que means that.

¡Qué + adjective or adverb!

  • ¡Qué bonito!How pretty!
  • ¡Qué bien cantas!You sing so well!

The adjective agrees with what you're talking about: ¡Qué guapa estás!

¡Qué + noun!

English says What a...! Spanish uses no article.

  • ¡Qué sorpresa!What a surprise!
  • ¡Qué calor hace!It's so hot!

¡Qué + noun + más or tan + adjective!

To say What a beautiful day!, put más or tan before the adjective:

  • ¡Qué día más bonito!What a beautiful day!
  • ¡Qué niños tan educados!What polite children!

¡Cuánto...! How much, how many

Cuánto + verb = how much. With a noun, it agrees: cuánto, cuánta, cuántos, cuántas.

  • ¡Cuánto te echo de menos!I miss you so much!
  • ¡Cuánta gente hay aquí!There are so many people here!

¡Cómo + verb! is similar: ¡Cómo llueve! (It's really pouring!).

Short reactions

ReactionMeaning
¡Qué bien!Great!
¡Qué suerte!How lucky!
¡Qué pena!What a shame!
¡Qué rollo!What a drag! (Spain, colloquial)
¡Qué va!Not at all! No way! (Spain)
¡Vaya!Wow! Oh dear! (surprise or disappointment)
  • ¡Vaya, ha empezado a llover!Oh no, it's started raining!

¡Vaya + noun! is like What a...!, often with irony: ¡Vaya día! (What a day!). In Spain, ¡Menudo + noun! works the same way: ¡Menudo lío! (What a mess!).

Latin America

¡Qué...! and ¡Cuánto...! are used everywhere. Colloquial reactions vary: you will hear ¡Qué padre! (Mexico), ¡Qué chévere! (Colombia, Venezuela) or ¡Qué bárbaro! (Argentina) for How great! ¡Qué va! is common in Spain and the Caribbean.

Common mistakes

  • ¡Qué una sorpresa! → ¡Qué sorpresa! No article after qué.
  • ¡Que bonito! → ¡Qué bonito! The exclamation word needs its accent; que without it means "that".
  • ¡Cómo bonito! → ¡Qué bonito! "How" + adjective is qué, not cómo.
  • ¡Cuánto gente! → ¡Cuánta gente! Cuánto agrees with the noun.
  • Forgetting the opening ¡. Spanish needs both marks.
