Indefinite pronouns talk about people or things without naming them.

man: people in general

man means you, one, people, they in a general sense. It always takes the er/sie/es form of the verb. Don't confuse it with der Mann (the man).

  • In Deutschland trennt man den Müll.In Germany people separate their rubbish.
  • Hier darf man nicht rauchen. You're not allowed to smoke here.

In the accusative man becomes einen, in the dative einem: Das macht einen müde.

jemand and niemand

jemand = someone, anyone; niemand = no one, nobody. They take the er-form of the verb. In the accusative and dative they can add an ending, which is the safe written form.

jemandniemand
nominativejemandniemand
accusativejemandenniemanden
dativejemandemniemandem
  • Ist da jemand? Is anyone there?
  • Ich habe niemanden gesehen.I didn't see anyone.

etwas and nichts

etwas = something, anything; nichts = nothing. They never change. After them, an adjective becomes a noun with a capital and ends in -es: etwas Neues, nichts Besonderes. In speech etwas is often shortened to was.

  • Möchtest du etwas trinken?Would you like something to drink?
  • Es gibt nichts Neues. There's no news.

alle, alles, jeder, einige

WordMeaningVerb
alleeveryone, all (people)plural: Alle sind da.
alleseverythingsingular: Alles ist gut.

  • Ich habe alles verstanden.I understood everything.
  • Jeder kennt das Problem.Everyone knows the problem.

German does not double the negative. nicht + jemand becomes niemand, and nicht + etwas becomes nichts (see Where nicht goes: nicht mehr, noch nicht, nie).

Common mistakes

  • Ich habe nicht jemanden gesehen. Say Ich habe niemanden gesehen.
  • Alle ist da. alle is plural: Alle sind da. But Alles ist gut.
  • Ich habe alle verstanden when you mean "everything": that says "I understood everyone". Use alles.
