German uses different prepositions for when, ago, since, in (a week), from and until. Most of them take the dative.

Points in time: um, am, im

You know these from Telling the time: 18.30 Uhr and halb sieben:

PrepositionUsed forExample
umclock timesum acht Uhr, um halb sieben
amdays, dates, parts of the dayam Montag, am 3. Mai, am Abend, am Wochenende
immonths, seasonsim Juli, im Winter
in derthe nightin der Nacht

Years usually have no preposition: 2020 bin ich nach Wien gezogen, or im Jahr 2020.

  • Am Wochenende besuchen wir meine Oma.At the weekend we visit my grandma.
  • Im Winter ist es hier sehr kalt.In winter it's very cold here.
  • Wir treffen uns um halb sieben. We're meeting at half past six.

Before, after, ago, in: vor, nach, in + dative

  • vor + dative = ago (with a length of time) or before (with an event): vor zwei Jahren, vor dem Essen. Note that vor comes before the time, unlike English ago.
  • nach + dative = after: nach der Arbeit.
  • in + dative = in (a time from now): in einer Woche.
  • Vor zwei Jahren bin ich nach Berlin gezogen. Two years ago I moved to Berlin.
  • Nach dem Frühstück gehen wir spazieren. After breakfast we go for a walk.
  • In einer Woche haben wir Urlaub. In a week we'll be on holiday.

Since, from, until: seit, ab, bis

  • seit + dative = since or for, for something that is still going on. German uses the present tense here, where English uses have been.
  • ab = from … on, a starting point, usually now or in the future.
  • bis = until, by. Before an article it becomes bis zum, bis zur.
  • Ich wohne seit drei Monaten in Köln.I've been living in Cologne for three months.
  • Ab Montag arbeite ich nur vier Tage. From Monday I'm only working four days a week.
  • Der Laden ist bis acht Uhr geöffnet. The shop is open until eight o'clock.

During: während

während = during. In writing it takes the genitive (The genitive: des Mannes, der Frau, Annas Auto); in speech you'll also hear the dative.

  • Während des Films hat sie geschlafen. She slept during the film.

seit looks back from now (seit drei Jahren = for the last three years); vor points to a moment in the past (vor drei Jahren = three years ago); in points forward (in drei Jahren = three years from now).

Common mistakes

  • Ich wohne hier für drei Jahre. For something still going on use seit + dative and the present: Ich wohne seit drei Jahren hier.
  • Ich habe hier seit drei Jahren gewohnt when you still live there: use the present, Ich wohne seit drei Jahren hier.
  • zwei Jahre vor: vor goes in front, vor zwei Jahren, with the dative plural -n.
  • in Montag, am Juli: days take am, months take im.
  • im 2020: say 2020 or im Jahr 2020.
