In Germany you usually go first to your Hausarzt or Hausärztin (GP). You phone the Praxis (surgery) to make a Termin (appointment). In Austria a doctor's surgery is also called the Ordination.

Saying what is wrong

Ich habe + … for pains and illnesses. Pains are usually plural: Schmerzen.

GermanEnglish
Ich habe Kopfschmerzen.I've got a headache.
Ich habe Halsschmerzen.I've got a sore throat.
Ich habe Bauchschmerzen.I've got stomach ache.
Ich habe Fieber.I've got a temperature.
Ich habe Husten und Schnupfen.I've got a cough and a runny nose.
Ich bin erkältet.I've got a cold.

Mir ist + adjective for how you feel. The person is in the dative (Dative pronouns: mir, dir, ihm), and there is no ich:

GermanEnglish
Mir ist schlecht.I feel sick.
Mir ist schwindlig.I feel dizzy.
Mir ist kalt.I'm cold.

wehtun (to hurt) is separable: Mir tut … weh for one thing, Mir tun … weh for several.

  • Ich habe seit gestern Kopfschmerzen.I've had a headache since yesterday.
  • Mir ist schlecht.I feel sick.
  • Mir tut der Rücken weh.My back hurts.

The doctor may give you a Rezept (prescription), which you take to the Apotheke (pharmacy). A Drogerie sells soap and cosmetics, not prescription medicine.

Wishing someone well

  • Gute Besserung!Get well soon!

Gesundheit! is what you say when someone sneezes.

In an emergency, call 112 for an ambulance (der Rettungswagen) anywhere in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. 110 is the police in Germany.
