Verbs as nouns: das Lesen, beim Kochen, zum Lernen

Turn any verb into a noun and use it with beim, zum and vom.

Part of the free B1 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

Any German infinitive can become a noun. It is always neuter (das), always has a capital letter, and usually has no plural. English often uses -ing for the same idea: das Lesen = reading.

  • Das Lesen macht mir großen Spaß.I really enjoy reading.
  • Rauchen ist hier verboten.Smoking is not allowed here.

beim, zum, vom

With a preposition, the article usually merges with it:

PhraseMeaningExample
beim (bei dem) + nounwhile doingbeim Kochen = while cooking
zum (zu dem) + nounfor, for the purpose ofzum Lesen = for reading
vom (von dem) + nounfrom doingvom Laufen = from running
nach dem / vor dem + nounafter / beforenach dem Essen = after eating
  • Beim Kochen höre ich gern Radio.I like listening to the radio while I cook.
  • Ich brauche eine Brille zum Lesen.I need glasses for reading.
  • Hast du etwas zum Schreiben?Do you have something to write with?
  • Ich bin ganz müde vom Laufen.I'm really tired from running.
  • Nach dem Essen machen wir einen Spaziergang. After eating we go for a walk.

Beim + noun is a short way of saying wenn or während + clause: Wenn ich koche, … = Beim Kochen …

With an object: one word

When the verb has a simple object or partner, it joins the noun as one word:

PhraseNoun
Fahrrad fahrendas Fahrradfahren
Deutsch lernendas Deutschlernen
Auto fahrendas Autofahren
Zähne putzendas Zähneputzen
  • Beim Fahrradfahren trage ich immer einen Helm.I always wear a helmet when cycling.
  • Das Deutschlernen ist am Anfang nicht leicht.Learning German isn't easy at the start.

Adjectives can become nouns too: see Adjectives as nouns: der Deutsche, ein Bekannter, etwas Neues.

When you see beim, zum or vom followed by a capitalised word ending in -en, it is almost always a verb as a noun. Translate it with -ing.

Common mistakes

  • beim kochen: a nominalised verb needs a capital letter: beim Kochen.
  • die Lesen, der Schwimmen: verbs as nouns are always neuter: das Lesen, das Schwimmen.
  • bei Kochen: use the merged form with the article: beim Kochen.
  • das Fahrrad Fahren: with an object, write one word: das Fahrradfahren.
  • Zum Kochen höre ich Musik for "while cooking": zum means "for"; "while" is beim.
