In The future: werden, and the present for plans you used werden for the future. In real conversation, werden is used at least as often for guesses: what is probably true now, or what probably happened.

Guessing about now: werden + infinitive

Add wohl, sicher, bestimmt or schon to show how sure you are.

Anna isn't in the office; she's probably ill.
  • Es wird ungefähr acht Uhr sein.It must be about eight o'clock.

Guessing about the past: Futur II

The Futur II is werden + participle + haben / sein. The choice of haben or sein is the same as in the Perfekt.

  • Ich werde den Schlüssel wohl im Auto gelassen haben.I must have left the key in the car.
  • Der Zug wird schon abgefahren sein. The train will have left already.
  • Sie werden bestimmt schon gegessen haben. They'll surely have eaten already.

Finished by a point in the future

Less often, the Futur II does what English will have done does: something will be finished by a certain time.

By the end of June I'll have passed the exam.

In a subordinate clause

werden goes to the very end:

In everyday speech, Germans often skip werden and use the Perfekt with wohl: Er hat es wohl vergessen. Both are correct; the Futur II sounds a little more careful.

Common mistakes

  • Thinking every wird means future: Das wird der Postbote sein is a guess about now: That'll be the postman.
