German grammar lessons › Level B2 › The four German cases

Genitive prepositions and set phrases: angesichts, aufgrund, mithilfe

Use the genitive prepositions of written German (angesichts, aufgrund, innerhalb, mithilfe, bezüglich) and set phrases like eines Tages and meines Erachtens.

Part of the free B2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

You know wegen, trotz, während and statt (wegen, trotz, während, statt + genitive). Written and formal German uses many more prepositions with the genitive. Most of them come from nouns or adjectives, which is why they take the genitive.

PrepositionMeaningExample
angesichtsin view ofangesichts der hohen Kosten
aufgrunddue to, because ofaufgrund des schlechten Wetters
infolgeas a result ofinfolge des Unfalls
innerhalbwithin, insideinnerhalb einer Woche
außerhalboutsideaußerhalb der Stadt

bezüglichregardingbezüglich Ihrer Anfrage
hinsichtlichwith regard tohinsichtlich der Kosten
zugunstenin favour of, for the benefit ofzugunsten der Kinder
oberhalb / unterhalbabove / belowoberhalb des Dorfes

When there is no article: von

If the genitive would not be visible (a plural noun with no article or adjective), use von + dative: innerhalb von zwei Wochen, aufgrund von Problemen, anhand von Beispielen.

  • Angesichts der hohen Preise verzichten viele Menschen auf Urlaub. In view of the high prices, many people are doing without a holiday.
  • Aufgrund eines technischen Problems fällt der Zug aus.Due to a technical problem the train is cancelled.
  • Bitte zahlen Sie die Rechnung innerhalb von zehn Tagen. Please pay the bill within ten days.
  • Mithilfe einer App lernt sie jeden Tag neue Wörter. With the help of an app she learns new words every day.
  • Bezüglich Ihrer Anfrage melden wir uns bis Freitag.Regarding your enquiry, we'll get back to you by Friday.

Set phrases with the genitive

Some fixed expressions are genitives without any preposition.

eines Tagesone day (past or future)
eines Morgens, eines Abendsone morning, one evening
eines Nachtsone night (irregular, although die Nacht)

  • Meines Wissens hat das Geschäft heute geöffnet. As far as I know, the shop is open today.

In everyday speech you will hear wegen dem Wetter, and some of these prepositions with the dative. In writing, and with all the more formal ones in this lesson, use the genitive.

Common mistakes

  • aufgrund dem schlechten Wetter Use the genitive: aufgrund des schlechten Wetters.
  • innerhalb zwei Wochen Without an article the genitive is invisible: innerhalb von zwei Wochen.
  • eines Nacht The set phrase is eines Nachts, by analogy with eines Tages.
  • meines Erachtens nach No nach: meines Erachtens or meiner Meinung nach.
