wenn is the all-purpose if. B2 German has more precise ways to state a condition, and each has its own word order.

  • Sollten Sie Fragen haben, rufen Sie mich jederzeit an.Should you have any questions, call me any time.

Notes

  • falls stresses that the condition may not happen. Unlike wenn, it never means when.
  • es sei denn already contains the negation (unless), so don't add nicht for the same meaning.
  • Verb first: you can drop wenn and start with the verb. With sollte this is very common in formal letters. The main clause then starts with its verb too: Sollten Sie Fragen haben, rufen Sie mich an.
  • bei + noun is the nominal-style condition (Nominal style: bei Regen, nach Abschluss des Studiums): bei Regen, im Notfall, bei Fragen.
  • Im Notfall wählen Sie bitte die 112.In an emergency please dial 112.

wenn + something certain = when. Wenn ich in Köln ankomme, rufe ich dich an (I will arrive). Falls ich in Köln ankomme… would suggest you might not make it.

Common mistakes

  • Wir treffen uns, es sei denn, regnet es. After es sei denn use normal main-clause order: es sei denn, es regnet.
  • …, es sei denn, es regnet nicht when you mean unless it rains: es sei denn is already negative.
  • Sollten Sie Fragen haben, Sie rufen mich an. After the verb-first clause, the main clause starts with its verb: rufen Sie mich an.
  • Falls ich nächste Woche 30 werde, … for a certain event use wenn.
