Correlates: es, darauf, damit before a clause

Announcing a dass, ob or zu clause with es or a da-word: Ich freue mich darauf, dass …

Many verbs take a prepositional object: sich freuen auf, warten auf, denken an, abhängen von. When that object is a whole clause (a dass or ob clause, or an infinitive with zu), German announces it in the main clause with a correlate: da(r)- + the preposition.

I'm looking forward to seeing each other again soon.
It depends on whether we get the money.
She insists on paying the bill herself.
We have to make sure that everyone is informed in time.
He didn't expect so many people to come.

Forming the da-word

Da- + preposition; if the preposition starts with a vowel, an r is added.

PrepositionCorrelateExample verb

Required or optional

With some verbs the correlate is required: abhängen von, bestehen auf, es kommt darauf an, es geht darum. With many others it is optional and more common in writing: Ich erinnere mich (daran), dass …, Ich freue mich (darüber), dass …. With hoffen it is usually left out.

It depends on how you ask the question.

es as a correlate

Subject and object clauses can be announced by es. When the clause moves to the front, es disappears.

I'm very glad that you came.
  • Dass Sie gekommen sind, freut mich sehr. The fact that you came makes me very happy.
  • Ich halte es für einen Fehler, jetzt aufzugeben.I think it's a mistake to give up now.

With halten für, ablehnen and schaffen, the object es is normally required.

Questions use wo(r)- + preposition: Worauf freust du dich? Woran denkst du?

Common mistakes

  • Ich freue mich auf, dass … A preposition cannot stand alone before a clause: darauf.
  • Es hängt ab, ob … The correlate is required: Es hängt davon ab, ob …
  • Dass du kommst, freut es mich. When the clause comes first, es goes: Dass du kommst, freut mich.
  • Ich warte dafür, dass … The correlate keeps the verb's own preposition: warten auf, so darauf.
  • daauf, daüber: before a vowel add r, darauf, darüber.
