How to choose a DELF B2 preparation platform

Eight things to check before you spend weeks on a course, app or book, and where SparkAI stands on each one, limits included.

1. Is it the current format?

Reading and listening changed format: the current one has three exercises each, all multiple choice or matching. Material written for the older format trains the wrong habits.

SparkAI: Built on the current format only. The older one is modelled but no mock uses it.

2. Are the mocks timed like the exam?

Part of the difficulty is time. A mock you can pause inside a section, or a recording you can replay at will, makes the exam look easier than it is.

SparkAI: Each section runs on a server clock that keeps going if you reload, and each recording plays only the number of times the exam allows.

3. How are writing and speaking marked?

They're half the exam, and the hardest to self-assess. Look for marks on the official grid's criteria with evidence from your own text, not a single score or general comments.

SparkAI: An AI applies the official 2022 grids criterion by criterion and quotes your words for each mark. It's not yet checked against human examiners, so grades are shown as a range and labelled as estimates.

4. Can you practise speaking out loud?

The oral is a presentation and a discussion. Reading model answers isn't the same as defending a point of view while someone challenges it.

SparkAI: An AI examiner gives you two subjects, times your preparation, records your presentation, then asks follow-up questions you answer out loud.

5. Does it apply the real pass rule?

The DELF B2 needs 50/100 overall and 5/25 in every section: a good average can hide a failing section.

SparkAI: Results are shown section by section against the minimum, with the official rule applied, and readiness is never given as a chance of passing.

6. What does it cost, and what's behind the paywall?

Check what is free in practice: whole mocks and corrections, or only sample questions.

SparkAI: Free: no payment details. Mocks and AI grading need a free account; AI grades are limited to 5 a day.

7. What language is the interface in?

If you're more comfortable in another language than English, explanations you can't follow aren't much help.

SparkAI: The exam material is in French; the interface and the feedback are in English.

8. Is a human involved?

A teacher or examiner who corrects your work is the closest thing to the exam's own marking.

SparkAI: No: SparkAI has no human tutors or examiners. If you can get a qualified teacher to mark some of your writing and speaking, do; use SparkAI for the volume of practice in between.

Whatever you choose

Questions

What should a DELF B2 preparation platform have?

Mocks in the current format, timed as in the exam; writing and speaking marked on the official grid's criteria with evidence; real speaking practice; the official pass rule applied section by section; and clear limits on what's automated.

Is there free DELF B2 preparation online?

Yes. France Éducation international publishes sample papers for each level, and SparkAI's mocks, practice and AI grading are free with a free account.

Can AI grade the DELF B2 writing and speaking?

It can apply the grid and point to evidence, which is useful for practice. How closely it matches examiners has to be measured; SparkAI's grades haven't been checked against examiners yet, so they're shown as ranges and labelled as estimates.

Is SparkAI official?

SparkAI isn't affiliated with or endorsed by France Éducation international, which sets and awards the DELF. The mocks and exercises are original practice material in the official format, not past papers, and a score in SparkAI isn't a DELF result.
