DELF B2 writing
60 minutes, one argued text of at least 250 words, 25 points, marked on five criteria. Practise on DELF-style tasks and get each criterion graded.
The task
You take a position on a question and argue for it, in the form the instructions give: a contribution to a debate, a formal letter or a critical article. The instructions name the reader and what to include (often proposals or examples).
The grid
Each criterion gets 0, 1, 3 or 5 points; 3 means it's met at B2.
- Réalisation de la tâche: the right kind of text for the reader named, a clear position, arguments developed with precise examples, everything the instructions ask for.
- Cohérence et cohésion: a clear structure in paragraphs, ideas linked logically, varied connectors, punctuation that helps the reader.
- Adéquation sociolinguistique: the right register, and the openings and closings the kind of text expects.
- Lexique: range and precision of vocabulary for the topic, few repetitions, correct spelling.
- Morphosyntaxe: range and control of grammar: complex sentences, tenses and moods (subjunctive and conditional where they're needed), agreement.
Two rules matter before any of that: 124 words or fewer is 0 on every criterion, and a text that's off the subject or not the kind of text asked for has its marks capped on the criteria concerned.
How to work on it
- Plan for ten minutes: your position, two or three arguments each with an example, and an answer to the other side.
- Use the conventions of the genre: how a formal letter opens and closes, a title for an article.
- Use the structures the grid rewards where they fit: concession (bien que, même si), hypothesis, the subjunctive after expressions of opinion and necessity.
- Keep five minutes to reread for agreement, tenses and spelling, and count your words.
