Register: formal letters, e-mails and spoken German
Open and close formal and informal e-mails correctly, switch between written and spoken German, and handle Sie and du at work.
Part of the free B2 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.
German marks the difference between formal and informal communication more clearly than English, starting with Sie and du (du, ihr or Sie: which you?). At B2 you need to write a correct formal e-mail, recognise colloquial speech, and know when to switch.

Sie and du at work
Traditional companies, public offices and customer contact use Sie. Many start-ups, tech firms and young teams use du from day one. The usual rule: the older or more senior person offers the du. Germans call it duzen and siezen.
- Wollen wir uns nicht duzen?Shall we use du with each other?
When in doubt, start with Sie and wait for the other person to offer du. Going from Sie to du is easy; going back is awkward.
