ohne … zu, statt … zu, and the past infinitive

Say without doing and instead of doing (ohne zu, statt zu, ohne dass, anstatt dass) and use the past infinitive: froh, dich kennengelernt zu haben.

You know zu + infinitive and um … zu (zu + infinitive, um … zu and damit: saying why). Two more infinitive constructions express without -ing and instead of -ing, and the infinitive itself can refer to the past or be passive.

ohne … zu and (an)statt … zu

English without / instead of + -ing is ohne … zu / (an)statt … zu + infinitive. This works only when both parts have the same subject. If the subjects are different, use ohne dass / (an)statt dass + a full clause.

Same subjectDifferent subjects
Er ging, ohne sich zu verabschieden.Er ging, ohne dass wir es merkten.
Statt zu lernen, spielte sie.Anstatt dass er hilft, sieht er fern.

zu comes directly before the infinitive; with separable verbs it goes inside: ohne anzurufen, statt aufzuräumen.

  • Er ist gegangen, ohne sich zu verabschieden. He left without saying goodbye.
She signed the contract without reading it carefully.
The burglar got into the house without anyone noticing anything.
Instead of studying, Jonas played all evening.
Instead of the city building new cycle lanes, the car parks are being expanded.

The past and passive infinitive

ActivePassive
Presentzu sehengesehen zu werden
Past (with haben)gesehen zu haben
Past (with sein)gekommen zu sein

Use the past infinitive when the action happened before the main verb: participle + zu haben or zu sein (whichever auxiliary the verb takes in the perfect).

  • Ich freue mich, Sie kennengelernt zu haben.I'm glad to have met you.
He claims never to have received the letter.
She's annoyed with herself for going home so early.
  • Kinder lieben es, gelobt zu werden.Children love being praised.

Prefer the infinitive when the subjects are the same: Er ging, ohne zu frühstücken sounds better than ohne dass er frühstückte.

Common mistakes

  • ohne zu anrufen With separable verbs zu goes inside: ohne anzurufen.
  • Ich ging, ohne dass ich frühstückte. Same subject: use the infinitive: Ich ging, ohne zu frühstücken.
