Advanced concession: quelque… que, si… que, tout… que
However rich he may be…
Beyond bien que and quoique, French has elegant ways to say "however…", "whatever…" and "wherever…".
si / aussi / quelque + adjective + que + subjunctive
- Si riche qu'il soit, il n'est pas heureux. However rich he may be, he isn't happy.
- Quelque intelligente qu'elle soit…However intelligent she may be…
Quelque is invariable before an adjective.
quelque(s) + noun + que + subjunctive
Here quelque agrees with the noun:
- Quelques efforts qu'il fasse, il échoue.Whatever efforts he makes, he fails.
tout + adjective + que (+ indicative)
- Tout riche qu'il est, il est malheureux.Rich as he is, he's unhappy.
Tout becomes toute(s) before a feminine adjective starting with a consonant or aspirate h:
- Toute petite qu'elle soit, elle n'a peur de rien.Small as she is, she's afraid of nothing.
quoi que, qui que, où que
- Quoi qu'il dise, je ne le crois pas.Whatever he says, I don't believe him.
- Où que tu ailles, je te suivrai.Wherever you go, I'll follow you.
- Qui que vous soyez…Whoever you are…
Quoi que (two words) = whatever. Quoique (one word) = although.
Related: Subjunctive after necessity and wishes, Subjunctive in relative clauses.
