Learn the fixed noun + verb pairs of formal German (eine Entscheidung treffen, in Kraft treten, zur Verfügung stehen) and which verb each noun takes.

A Funktionsverbgefüge is a fixed pair of a noun and a light verb (treffen, stellen, nehmen, bringen, kommen, stehen). The noun carries the meaning; the verb adds little more than tense and person. Many have a simple verb that means almost the same, but the pair sounds more formal or more precise, and it is very common in work, news and official German.

You can't swap the verb for one that seems logical. English make a decision is treffen, not machen; ask a question is stellen. Learn each noun together with its verb and preposition, as a single unit.

Both spellings infrage and in Frage are correct; Duden recommends infrage.
