Persuasion in German has its own conventions. Public speakers and commentators prefer sober argument with a sharp edge to big emotion; too much pathos sounds suspicious to many German listeners. This lesson builds on Giving opinions: Ich finde, dass…; meiner Meinung nach and Academic connectors: insofern als, demnach, folglich, hingegen, sowie.

Structure

A German essay or commentary (Erörterung, Kommentar) typically moves through:

  1. A hook: a question, a striking fact, a scene.
  2. The thesis.
  3. Arguments, each with claim, reason and example.
  4. The strongest counter-argument, conceded and then rebutted.
  5. A conclusion or appeal.

  • Wer von uns möchte in einer Stadt ohne Bäume leben?Which of us would want to live in a city without trees?
  • Wir brauchen Mut, wir brauchen Geduld, und wir brauchen einander. We need courage, we need patience, and we need each other.
  • Wir leben nicht, um zu arbeiten, sondern wir arbeiten, um zu leben. We don't live to work, we work to live.
  • Man mag einwenden, dass die Maßnahme teuer ist.One may object that the measure is expensive.
  • Dem ist jedoch entgegenzuhalten, dass Untätigkeit noch teurer wäre.Against this, however, it must be said that doing nothing would be even more expensive.

Phrases that carry an argument

  • Lassen Sie mich zum Schluss noch einen Gedanken äußern.Let me close with one more thought.

Gerade deshalb (precisely for that reason) is a favourite move: take your opponent's reason and turn it into an argument for your side.

Concede before you rebut. A German audience trusts a speaker who names the best counter-argument and answers it more than one who ignores it.

Common mistakes

  • English-style pathos: a string of superlatives and exclamation marks sounds overblown in a German commentary.
  • Writing ich finde in every paragraph of an essay. Vary with impersonal forms: Es spricht vieles dafür, dass …
  • Overusing Fakt ist: it sounds aggressive and populist.
  • Only using aber for contrast. Vary with jedoch, allerdings, dennoch.
  • Saying the same thing twice to close: Zum Schluss möchte ich am Ende sagen …
