Giving opinions: Ich finde, dass…; meiner Meinung nach

Say what you think, agree and disagree, and weigh up pros and cons.

Part of the free B1 German course. Press the speaker next to an example to hear it.

At B1 you need to give and defend an opinion: in a discussion, an exam or a short essay. The phrases are fixed, but each one has its own word order.

Giving your opinion

PhraseWord orderExample
Ich finde / glaube / denke, dass …verb at the end…, dass das zu teuer ist.
Ich finde / glaube, …normal order…, das ist zu teuer.
Meiner Meinung nach …verb straight afterMeiner Meinung nach ist das zu teuer.
Ich bin der Meinung, dass …verb at the end…, dass das zu teuer ist.
Ich bin für / gegen + accusativeIch bin gegen den Plan.
Ich bin dafür / dagegen, dass …verb at the end…, dass wir warten.

Meiner Meinung nach (and meiner Ansicht nach) fills position 1, so the verb comes next (see weil and dass: the verb goes to the end for the clauses with dass).

  • Ich finde, dass Busse und Bahnen billiger sein sollten.I think buses and trains should be cheaper.
  • Meiner Meinung nach ist das Homeoffice eine gute Lösung. In my opinion, working from home is a good solution.
  • Ich bin dagegen, dass die Bibliothek am Sonntag schließt.I'm against the library closing on Sundays.

Agreeing and disagreeing

Da hast du recht.Das sehe ich anders.
Das stimmt.Da bin ich anderer Meinung.

Genau!Das stimmt so nicht.
  • Da hast du recht. You're right there.

Building an argument

PurposePhrases
two sideseinerseits … andererseits; zum einen … zum anderen
pros and consEin Vorteil ist, dass … Ein Nachteil ist, dass …
addingaußerdem, dazu kommt, dass …
contrastaber, im Gegenteil, trotzdem
concludingZusammenfassend kann man sagen, dass …
  • Einerseits ist die Stadt teuer, andererseits gibt es viele Jobs.On the one hand the city is expensive, on the other there are lots of jobs.
  • Ein großer Vorteil ist, dass man viel Zeit spart.A big advantage is that you save a lot of time.

Einerseits and andererseits are adverbs, so the verb comes straight after them. Linking words like deshalb and trotzdem work the same way (deshalb, deswegen, darum, sonst, obwohl and trotzdem: although, and still); pairs like nicht nur … sondern auch are in entweder … oder, weder … noch, sowohl … als auch.

In an exam essay, use one phrase from each row: an opinion, a pro, a con, and a conclusion. Varied phrases count, and they keep your word order under control.

Common mistakes

  • Meiner Meinung nach das ist gut: the verb comes straight after: Meiner Meinung nach ist das gut.
  • In meiner Meinung (from English in my opinion): say meiner Meinung nach or ich finde.
  • Ich bin mit dir zustimmen: say Ich stimme dir zu or Ich bin mit dir einverstanden.
  • Ich bin recht: in German you have right: Du hast recht.
  • Ich bin für, dass …: before a clause use dafür / dagegen: Ich bin dafür, dass …
