Lassen is one of the busiest verbs in German. It has three main jobs, and English needs three different verbs for them: leave, let and have something done.

Forms

PersonPresentPräteritum
ichlasseließ
dulässtließt
er / sie / eslässtließ
wirlassenließen
ihrlasstließt
sie / Sielassenließen

du and er get an umlaut: lässt. Imperative: lass!, lasst!, lassen Sie!

1. leave (alone, with an object)

  • Ich lasse mein Fahrrad heute zu Hause.I'm leaving my bike at home today.
  • Ich habe die Kinder bei der Oma gelassen.I left the children at Grandma's.

Lass mich in Ruhe! = Leave me alone! Lass das! = Stop that!

2. let, allow (+ infinitive)

  • Lässt du mich bitte durch? Will you let me through, please?
  • Meine Eltern ließen mich nie allein in die Stadt fahren. My parents never let me go into town on my own.

Lass uns … is a friendly way to say "let's":

  • Lass uns morgen ins Kino gehen!Let's go to the cinema tomorrow!

3. have something done (+ infinitive)

This is the use English speakers miss most. Someone else does the work:

  • Herr Schmidt lässt seine Wohnung renovieren.Mr Schmidt is having his flat renovated.
  • Ich lasse mir morgen die Haare schneiden.I'm getting my hair cut tomorrow.

When it is done to you or for you, add a dative reflexive pronoun, as in Reflexive pronouns in the dative: Ich wasche mir die Hände: Ich lasse mir die Haare schneiden. Lässt du dir einen Anzug machen?

sich lassen = can be done

  • Das Fenster lässt sich nicht öffnen. The window won't open.

Das lässt sich ändern = That can be changed.

The Perfekt: gelassen or lassen?

lassen alonelassen + infinitive
Ich habe den Schlüssel im Auto gelassen.Ich habe den Schlüssel machen lassen.

With another infinitive, the participle looks like the infinitive: lassen, not gelassen. This works like the modal verbs.

  • Wir haben die Heizung reparieren lassen. We had the heating repaired.

To check meaning 3, ask "who does the work?". If it isn't the subject, you need lassen: Ich repariere mein Auto (I do it) vs Ich lasse mein Auto reparieren (the garage does it).

Common mistakes

  • Er lasst mich gehen: er and du have an umlaut: er lässt, du lässt.
  • Ich habe mein Auto reparieren gelassen: with an infinitive, write reparieren lassen.
  • Ich lasse mir die Haare zu schneiden: lassen takes a bare infinitive, without zu: Ich lasse mir die Haare schneiden.
  • Ich habe meine Haare geschnitten when the hairdresser did it: say Ich habe mir die Haare schneiden lassen.
  • Lassen uns gehen!: to a friend say Lass uns gehen!; to several friends Lasst uns gehen!
